Practical Plastics for Marine Applications

Seaboard on the Boat

Allplastics machines and fabricates many products for the Marine industry and our facilities are available for the coming summer months. We have four products that are used regularly: SEABOARD™PolycarbonateCast Acrylic and AIR-board®.

SEABOARD™ is a high rigid density polyethylene sheet formulated to meet the specific requirements of marine and other outdoor environments. In addition, special post-production treatment enhances its ability to withstand the effects of salt water, moisture and direct sunlight. No delamination or rotting like timber, no rusting like steel!

Many recreational boat items can be made from SEABOARD™ such as benches, seats, hatches, doors, grab rails, step and dock boxes, rod and cup holders, chairs, tray tables, frames and trims.

Polycarbonate UV Grade or Cast Acrylic are being used for boat windows. Polycarbonate is suited for all outdoor applications where outstanding toughness and long life expectancy are required. It comes in a limited range tints. Clear Mar Resistant Polycarbonate is recommended for long term use.

Cast Acrylic is more common for boat windows than Polycarbonate; with a wider range of available tints to choose from. The high surface quality of Acrylic is achieved by casting against glass. It has long term weather resistance with no colour discoloration allowing 92% transmission of light.

AIR-board Decorative Composite Panels are a low-cost industrial product of innovative translucent honeycomb constructions with the smallest of adhesion surface areas. The polycarbonate tube with a dimension of only 7 mm in combination with transparent or coloured polycarbonate coating give the AIR-board® Panels a light structure plus the highest standard of fire-resistance. Ideal for decorative panels around engines where lightweight but rigid elements are required.

UHMWPE has proven to be a versatile material in numerous applications including materials handling, food production, bottling, marine and mining. UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is renowned for its Wear resistance, Low moisture absorption & slide properties.

UHMWPE-Marina-stoppers

The photo above shows UHMWPE solid strips being used for a marina as traction providors for boat trailer wheels in a steep angled marina. Previously timber was utilised which regularly splintered or rotted. The UHMWPE proved to be very good choice as replacement due to its excellent abrasion resistance. Allplastics can cut, drill, machine and CNC router shapes from UHMWPE shapes.
